Melissa,
one year on.

The strongest hurricane ever to strike Jamaica. This is the national record of what Melissa took, how Jamaica and the world answered, and how the country rebuilt, kept so that the generations after us know what happened and who stood up.

The storm, in the record

Verified figures from national and international sources. Each links to where it comes from.

From warning to recovery

The year in the order it happened, each date linked to its source.

    Who answered

The Government and people of Jamaica, nations near and far, international agencies, churches, companies and thousands of volunteers. Every action below is dated and linked to the record it comes from.

    The record

The full account, kept the same way for every part of it: what happened, where, who was there, the photographs, and the sources.

    People who served

Rescuers, officials, doctors, nurses, drivers, builders and neighbours. If you served, or know someone who did, add them to the record.

    We remember

Forty-five lives were lost in Jamaica, and thirteen people are still missing. Fifteen of those who died were from Westmoreland. Behind each number is a family that is still grieving.

Take a moment for them, and for everyone who lost a home, a harvest or a livelihood.

    Sources and method

This record is built from published sources: government releases, international agencies, company statements and the Jamaican and international press. Every figure and action links to where it was reported. Where sources disagree, the record says so.
